Abstract

This article publishes a document from the end of the 16th century and gives a more complete perspective at one of the battles between the Crown army, regional units and the Cossacks against the Tatar army led by Khan during the campaign of 1589. In his report to the Grand Crown Hetman Jan Zamoyski, the Crown scrivener Jan Potocki describes the battle of Bavorov that took place on August 22, 1589. In the report, Potocki lists all the company commanders, starostas, and voivodes who took part in the battle with their units. Separately he describes the courage of his relative Jakub Strus, Khmilnyk (Chmielnik) statosta, who died in this battle. Special attention is paid to the fate of the family of the dead Strus and those rotmisters who were taken in Tatar captivity. This description of the battle and the events around it stands out due to more details, the names of the company commanders, compared to the known from other literature description of this battle that originates from the continuation of the chronicle of Joachim Bielski published in 1851.
