Abstract

This article is devoted to the current problem of the modern female attitude to maternity. The theoretical analysis of the maternity concept and the factors which influence attitude to maternity are provided in this article. Behind the maternity we mean unique psychological phenomenon dependent on physiological mechanisms (instinct of procreation), cultural-historical aspects of the society formation, particularly family (image of mother) and individual psychological peculiarities of each woman (acceptance of a woman's own maternity). Authors’ methodics of the maternity problems’ investigation are proposed: questionary “Maternity” and methodic “Maternity image”. Social-psychological factors are analyzed empirically. Factors which show personal meaning of the mentioned aspects in personal life and form the bases of the female attitude to maternity are defined: 1) basic safety; 2) relations with the partner; 3) health status; 4) financial status. It is defined that women have the lowest level of satisfaction compared to others by the factor “relations with the partner”. At the same time this factor is the most important for each woman while making decision concerning her own maternity. The next image of modern mother is depicted. She is active, quite independent, self-confident and very responsible. She feels herself comparably safe, however at the same time some worries about her own maternity are still present. But nethertheless modern woman is happy to experience mother-hood. Besides the above mentioned it is defined that the important role in the female attitude to maternity is played by the sufficient level of subjective well-being, which has tight connections with the factors which determine motherhood.
