Abstract

This article provides the linguistic peculiarities of the phenomenon of telescopic modes in the English language. The author pays attention to the relevance of the researched subject, i.e. the phenomenon of “telescopy” or blending. The article presents it as a modern word-building method in English, which is associated with the linguistic economy due to various historic, political, geographical, sociocultural, economic and other conditions in the society. The research of telescopic modes in the English language enables us to study the origin grounds, to classify them, to determine their features, usage and functioning areas. The author uses herein various materials for the analysis of the phenomenon in English, i.e. mass media, scientific sources, texts of the modern classic literature, dictionaries, glossaries, linguistic literature and publications. The author presents different viewpoints on certain word-building neology processes and trends, provides the description and shows the quantitative and qualitative changes in the English word-building system. This scientific work shows the determined role of blending not only as the most productive word-building method at the modern stage of development of the word-building system, but as a source of formation of new word-building elements and models. This study of the telescopic word-building method confirms the axiomatic preciseness of the thesis that the word-building consistency, true mutual dependence of its tools and mechanisms. The materials studied attest that the formation of new word-building elements and models is caused by the convergent development of the national variants of the English language and dialects at the contemporary stage of the scientific-technological progress. The task is to study this linguistic phenomenon, to find its actual, true peculiarities at all the levels, to provide the systematic description and determine its functions and properties. Blending is not a new phenomenon. It appeared in the language and continues progressing by coming to more and more areas of usage and influencing the language itself. Blending is a productive word-building method that has a dynamic progress. This studied word-building model is actively used in the language of advertising, economy, politics, modern English literature. The scientists study the structural and notional properties of telescopic units, wherefrom it can be noted how significant this phenomenon is in the contemporary language. Drawing on the fact that the lexical units formed telescopically are notionally suffused, they correspond to the principles of linguistic economy and are objects of the borrowing process, which causes the spread of the English loan wordstelescopic words (portmanteau words) in other languages. It can therefore be concluded that telescopic words are integral for the modern vocabulary. Telescopic (portmanteau) words enrich the vocabulary with economic neologisms and cause their further formation. Blending is characterized with self-sufficiency, has its specific structural and semantical features. From this perspective, it should be mentioned that the phenomenon “telescopy” or blending requires its further research and study of the notion “telescopy”, “telescopic unit”, “telescopism”, “telescopic mode”, and study of the formation methods, mechanisms and specifics of the translation into other languages within different discourses.
