Abstract
Memoir literature is a valuable and important source for studying the history of everyday life in Kyiv in the middle – the second half of the 19th century. Studying documents of personal origin, we plunge into a specific era, trace how the author's personality, perceived a certain urban environment, what impression the author had of the city. We feel his perception of the unique image of the city of that time. These aspects allow us to view the city from different angles, to feel the city in a new way, and to look at the city life of that time through the eyes of another. The features of the individual perception of a direct eyewitness are designed to supplement the existing knowledge about the urban environment of Kyiv and show the city at the level of microhistory. The article aims to study the autobiographical memoirs of Olexander Romanovich–Slavatinsky about Kyiv from 1843 to 1884. The research methodology is based on the application of the principles of science, objectivity, historicism, consistency, methods of analysis and synthesis, logic, historical-chronological, retrospective, and biographic. The scientific novelty is the focus on the analysis of memoirs about Kyiv from 1843 to 1884, placed in the memoirs of Olexander Romanovich–Slavatinsky "My life and academic activity: 1832–1884: Memoirs and notes". Conclusions. After analyzing the memoirs of Olexander Romanovich–Slavatinsky, we were convinced that they were written in a fascinating, bright, informative way, and met the goal of “becoming useful for future research”, which was set by their author and which he adhered to when writing. We found that an important element of memories is the characteristics of significant personalities who fundamentally influenced the formation and development of Olexander Romanovich–Slavatinsky as a person, personality, researcher, and professional, in particular, professors of the Kyiv St. Volodymyr University P.V. Pavlov, V.Ya. Shulgin, M. Kh. Bunge. The memoirs also show the reaction of the author as an eyewitness to the course of events of the Polish uprising of 1863 in Kyiv. Our analysis of Oleksandr Romanovych-Slavatynsky's memoirs about Kyiv from 1843 to 1884 showed that Kyiv played a significant role in his becoming, development, and formation as a person, personality, scientist, and teacher, and reminded him of the best times of his life.
