Abstract
A study of Mykola Kostomarov's impressions of Kyiv from 1844 to 1847, which he left in his Autobiography, was conducted. The research methodology is based on the application of the principles of science, objectivity, historicism, systematics, methods of analysis and synthesis, logic, historical-chronological, retrospective, and biographical. Focusing on the impressions of the memoirs about Kyiv of 1844-1847, which are given in the autobiography of Mykola Kostomarov, is a scientific novelty. The article aims to explore the "Autobiography" of Mykola Kostomarov during his Kyiv period of life from 1844 to 1847 in order to supplement the knowledge about Kyiv and its urban environment through the eyes of the narrator. Conclusions. We have studied the personal impressions of Mykola Kostomarov and learned his thoughts on getting acquainted with St. Sophia Cathedral, walks in Pechersk, the old town, Khreshchatyk, Podil, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, communication with Panteleimon Kulish during walks around the city, his impressions of long and passionate conversations with Taras Shevchenko in the Sukhostavsky garden. We have analyzed Mykola Kostomarov's impressions of his work at St. Volodymyr's University and his acquaintance with students. After all, it was the University of St. Volodymyr and its students that created a special atmosphere in Kyiv at that time. We have learned that at the University Mykola Kostomarov immersed himself in teaching and history, prepared lectures, and wrote the work "Slavic Mythology", but had little to do with university professors. We have learned that the young professor noted the better training of Polish students, as well as the fact that the University's management, for fear of political free-thinking among students, forbade friendly relations between teachers and students. In his impressions, Mykola Kostomarov summed up that the policy of Russification of the Right Bank of Ukraine led to the fact that its Polish population could call themselves only Catholics and not Poles, and the concept of "Catholic", having lost its religious meaning, meant nationality. The historian noted that the Polish population did not want to study Russian and spoke only Polish, and those who studied Russian at schools tried to forget it as soon as possible. We are convinced that the Kyiv period of Mykola Kostomarov's life and his work at St. Volodymyr's University played an important role in his development as a historian, scientist, and teacher. To sum up, we have studied the Kyiv impressions of Mykola Kostomarov from 1844 to 1847, which he left in his "Autobiography". We have supplemented our knowledge of the image of Kyiv and its urban environment, have seen the city through the eyes of the narrator, and have felt his emotional mood from the city as a whole.
