Abstract

The study of memoirs as a source on the history of urban life is an important and relevant topic. The study of memories «School years: An excerpt from memories. 1852–1862» by Vasyl’ Avseenko as sources from the history of Kyiv's everyday life has a valuable historical and cultural interest, This allows us to trace the atmosphere, the image of Kyiv, the rhythm of life, events, moods that took place in the urban environment from 1856 to 1862. We can look at all this through the eyes of the narrator and feel his mood from the city, which is important for creating an image of the urban environment and everyday life in Kyiv based on eyewitness accounts. The article aims to study the history of everyday life in Kyiv from 1856 to 1862 through its analysis of the information about Kyiv of that time in the memoirs of Vasyl’ Avseenko. The research methodology is based on the application of the principles of science, objectivity, historicism, consistency, methods of analysis and synthesis, logic, historical-chronological, retrospective, and biographic. The scientific novelty is the focus on the analysis of memoirs about Kyiv from 1856 to 1862, placed in the memoirs of Vasyl’ Avseenko «School years: An excerpt from the memoirs. 1852–1862]». Writing diaries, memoirs, letters, and autobiographies was a common phenomenon in the XIX century, revealing the uniqueness of the life experiences of authors of ego documents. Vasyl’ Avseenko's memoirs are an important source for studying the history of Kyiv's everyday life. From the author's memoirs, we learn interesting information about the city, the First Kyiv Gymnasium, St. Volodymyr University, its outstanding professors, student life, the creation and spread of Ukrainophile current, and the events of the Polish uprising of 1863 in Kyiv. The study and analysis of Vasyl’ Avseenko's memoirs helped to see how the author subjectively perceived the urban environment of Kyiv from 1856 to 1863. Memories, memoirs, notes, and autobiographies of different people who write about the same time, allow us to recreate a holistic picture of the city in a certain period of history. The history of urban everyday life is not only dry facts, it is memories and people whose activities make history.
