Abstract
The periodization of art, the development of styles, trends and currents always requires significant clarification of their origins and the formation of the basis, as well as acquaintance with the creative paths and artistic activities of famous masters of painting and graphics. The formation and emergence of various schools of oil painting of the old masters of Europe is the main topic discussed in the article. The conditions for the formation of the Renaissance, Baroque and periodization of European art styles are indicated. The article analyzes the emergence of a new direction in the creation of paintings and the main stylistic features of these periods, which were due to the development of science and research in the exact, natural and artistic fields. The basis for the emergence of Italian art schools is covered as well (namely: Pisa, Siena, Umbria, Ferrara, Bologna, Florence, Venice and Rome), their trends and directions of rapid development of artistic activity, and the emergence of geniuses of painting, sculpture and graphics. The technological bases of working with oil paints are highlighted: combining pasty writing and scaffolding, painting techniques, work on very dark soils, use of underpainting and imprinting, light-tone construction, brush movement and smearing, and introduction of color works. All of that influenced the formation of creative style of artists and individual handwriting, which was recognizable over the years. Thus, in the further development of oil painting, many techniques began to flow smoothly, solder together, to form in new styles and new eras, and were enriched and spread in different countries. Through acquaintance with various schools of old masters and with the uniqueness of their work, we get an idea about the technologies and methods of working with oil paints of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, which allows contemporaries to learn the secrets of color combination, color glow, complex compositional arrangement and foreshortening, which the masters of painting in European schools of this period knew. Studying and understanding the main principles of the representatives of these schools provides today an opportunity to build on their experience in the art of painting. This knowledge provides a solid foundation for the creation of new, modern and innovative art, which always has a choice on whose traditions and methods to rely on, or whether to develop new, innovative searches for ways to perform creative artwork.
