Abstract

The article analyzes the anti-war, anti-totalitarian pathos of poems by Ukrainian poets from Transcarpathia Petro Skunts’ (“On the boundary of epochs”, “Crucifixion”) and Dmytro Kremin’ (“Gerstein’s Memorandum”), which synthesizes specifically regional and universal views. The regional vision of the essence of the Second World War in the poems of P. Skunts’ is that the enthusiasm for the struggle in the ranks of the Soviet Army with Hitler’s coalition was generated by the brutal national and social oppression of Transcarpathia by Hungary. The motive for the liberation of his native land is constantly heard in the internal monologues of the lyrical heroes Dmytro Vakarov and Ivan Kubynets’. The universal point of view is manifested in the fact that the heroes of the poems of Skunts’ and Kremin’ are fighting not for the ideals of the establishment of Soviet power and its ideology, but against the anti-human, merciless and cruel Nazi ideology, for the freedom and individuality of each person. The self-sacrifice of the characters for the sake of the future of mankind, up to death, is closely correlated in the poems with the sacrifice of Christ, which is manifested in biblical symbolism, collisions and allusions to the poems “Crucifixion” and “Gerstein’s Memorandum”. All this caused sharp dissatisfaction with the official authorities and critics, persecution of the authors of the poems.
