Abstract
The article, based on the analysis of diary entries of the outstanding Ukrainian writer Ivan Chendey (1922–2005), formulates the main provisions of his aesthetic views on the specifics of artistic creativity, on the essence of the artist's figure, on the role of the artist in fiction, art, in the life of society. For almost half a century, the writer recorded in the “Diaries” his impressions and reflections, including reflections on the essence of art, about ways to improve skills, about his own place in the literary process occupied a significant place. I. Chendey believed that the artist must have a significant creative talent to write literary works. The writer himself was convinced that he had such a creative gift from nature. The writer should also be empowered by “emotional susceptibility”. However, a gifted artist must constantly work on self-improvement, enrich himself with a knowledge of life and compreciation of the achievements of world culture. Therefore, the writer was very demanding to himself and to fellow writers, according to the highest criteria, he evaluated the work of Transcarpathian artists, Ukrainian and foreign writers. He was equally demanding of his own work. The highest authority in prose for himself, he considered M. Gogol, was equal to his creative level and achievements, not being satisfied with the intermediate stages. In the spirit of normative theories, Ivan Chendey perceived literature, art as important factors of social existence, and the writer, artist gave great responsibility to the community, so he demanded from him high morality and ethics. The writer, both in theory and in practice, was a supporter of mimetic art. The writer formulated such beliefs independently, to a large extent – under the influence of folk art and classical literature, although he was also prompted by the then dominant Marxist-Leninist aesthetic theory. The writer, however, had access to alternative sources from the field of aesthetics, primarily from Czechoslovak and Hungarian journals. In theoretical considerations, he did not accept modernist art, “abstractionism”, “English-language” music (rock ‘n’ roll), but often gave very high marks to individual modernist, avant-garde works of painting, literature, etc. Negative attitude to modernism, avant-garde I. Chendey motivated primarily their imaginary cosmopolitanism, because the writer above all put the national basis, the originality of fiction, a special role in the mastery of the national language.
