Abstract

The article analyzes the theoretical achievements and the history of studying the phenomenon of sense of humor. An analysis of research on the relationship between this phenomenon and anxiety and tolerance for uncertainty. The relationship between humor styles and the levels of expression of respondents’ mental states, as well as their tolerance for uncertain situations, was also studied. The study involved 20 people of both sexes aged 19 to 21 with the same education profile and educational institution. Methods: MSTAT-I (McLain) method of determining tolerance for uncertainty, Martin’s humor questionnaire, Eisenko’s method of selfassessment of mental states, mathematical and statistical methods, including descriptive statistics methods and correlation analysis methods. There was a direct link between aggression and self-sustaining humor, which indicates that respondents with increasing difficulties in communicating with others and aggression, respectively, increases the optimistic outlook on life, activates the mechanisms responsible for self-worth. The percentage of responses on the scales of sense of humor was also studied, which indicates a tendency to have an average level of affiliative, destructive, self-supporting and aggressive humor. The same situation applies to tolerance for uncertainty and the general level of mental states of respondents, including: anxiety, frustration, aggression and rigidity. Given our results, we can say that in the current situation of tension and anxiety, respondents tend to use the adaptive type of humor to a greater extent than non-adaptive. Therefore, it can be argued about the general good preparedness of the interviewed students-psychologists, who are able to actualize their own mobilization opportunities in situations of unpredictable order, in case of personal anxiety.
