Abstract
The article considers the issue of the activity of noble elected officials in the administrative mechanism of the Russian Empire during the reign of Nicholas I (1825–1855), when the estate stratification stabilized in the conditions of the extreme development of the Russian absolute monarchy. The aim of the article is to analyze how the system of noble self-government functioned at that time, in particular in the “Little Russian provinces” that is in the Poltava and Chernihiv regions. This goal is realized on three levels – first, the role of noble self-government in the imperial administrative apparatus, second, identifies the features of noble electoral culture and the reflection of its features in public opinion, which repelled the contemporary fiction and journalism, and third, personal experience of the election service of Hryhoriy Galagan, a representant of the Ukrainian nobility, which was a consolidated regional community.
