Abstract

The article, based on extensive involvement of archival documentary, epistolary and memoir sources, analyses individual pages of the life and activities of Anastasiia (Nastia) Grinchenko, the only daughter of Ukrainian writers and public figures Borys and Maria Grinchenko, in her last years. The events related to the trial for the case of self-defense, the participants of which were Anastasiia Grinchenko and Mykola Sakharov, were investigated considering family correspondence and memories of members of the Grinchenko family, letters of Nadiia Sakharova (Mykola Sakharov’s mother) to Anastasiia Grinchenko as well as memoirs of the participants of the «The Lubny Self-Defense». The moral and psychological atmosphere in the Grinchenko family, who experienced the arrest of their daughter, the search of accommodation, the illness of Mariia Grinchenko, the untimely death of Anastasiia, and the course of the court case in 1907–1909s, is represented. Little-known events related to the birth of Anastasiia’s son Volodymyr and Borys Grinchenko’s intentions to adopt a grandson after his daughter’s death are recreated. The relations in the Grinchenko family, which were based on the principles of mutual respect, friendship and love, are shown. It is noted that the tragic events of 1908–1909 in the life of the Grinchenko family did not break the moral strength of the family members. Assessments of Nastia Grinchenko’s activity in the Ukrainian social and political movement at the beginning of the 20th century considering obituaries published in Galician and Trans-Dnieper journals and newspapers, as well as the letters and memories of people close to the Grinchenkos are represented. It is concluded that the researched part of the biography of Anastasiia Grinchenko and the history of her family and surroundings more fully reproduce the little-known «internal» history of the development of the Ukrainian social and political movement at the beginning of the 20th century.
