Abstract

The article offers a reading of Salman Rushdie’s novel Midnight’s Childrenthrough the prism of the concept of memory, which unfolds in textual and subtextual dominants. The purpose of the research is to explore the individual-author model of iden-tity in Salman Rushdie’s novel, finding out the main textual mechanisms of constructing the concept of memory. Identity in the British writer’s novel is modeled by images and the motives realized by them. Thus, the motif of „fruit preservation” (= preservation of memory), duplicates of which are the motifs of sealing, closure, hiding, fragmentation, leakiness, disobedience, freedom, is realized by images of the gastronomic code (mari-nades, sauces, fruits, fish, rice), anthropomorphic code (nose, finger, hair), attribute code (sheet, kitchen, linen chest, chest on wheels, pantry, baskets, cans, boxes, sacks, nuts, grains, eggs). The semantic key of all these images and motifs that preserve memory is the symbolism of eternity, continuity, self-sufficiency, return, repetition, cyclicality, continuity (round-shaped images). The concept of oblivion as one of the components of the concept of memory is explained by the motives of dispersion, destruction, disintegration. At the same time, the magical dance of the prophet (as a reproduction of the ritual of initiation with the semantics of suggestion through the motifs of circling, circling, cyclicity), writing (as a sacred action), dreams (as modeling memories of the future) is simultaneously the return of memories, the leveling of oblivion
