Abstract
Based on the methodology of affect studies, the research paper explores FEAR–TERROR affect in children’s testimony of the realities of the War collected in the 1985 non-fiction Last Witnesses: An Oral History of the Children of World War II by Svetlana Alexievich. In the focal point of the novel, there are hardships of the War and its destructive consequences – death, orphanhood, torture, starvation, concentration camp ordeal, and life in the zone occupied by the Nazis, which are narrated and recalled by witnesses. In her prose, Svetlana Alexievich portrays traumatic experiences which scarred the adolescent survivors for life. With the vivid intensities, the author conveys the atmosphere of the War through the meticulous recording of the voices of the War victims, and by unearthing the emotional layers which are marked by embodied fear. We argue that fear and terror constitute the core of Svetlana Alexievich’s narrative, and interpret the affective component of the witnesses’ testimonies.
