Abstract

Epistemological, axiological and praxeological features of the Hippocratic Oath as a professional oath are considered in the article. The cultural and historical dimension of this oath is highlighted. The Hippocratic Oath is the most famous professional oath in the world. It is used as a professional oath of a medical doctor in a number of countries. It is also a widely known sample of a medical doctor's professional oath as a historical monument. The Hippocratic Oath is a cultural and legal phenomenon of classical ancient culture. Its ethical categories and its symbolic dimension are accepted in many modern states, in particular in Ukraine. They are superimposed on the actual professional knowledge and skills of the doctor and the legal requirements for the medical profession. The Hippocratic Oath is the first historical treatise on professional ethics. Among similar historical monuments, the Charaka Shapath oath is also used in India. It is an Ayurvedic text that addresses the same issues as the Hippocratic Oath. Taking a professional oath by a doctor is now generally accepted. In 1948, the General Assembly of the International Medical Association adopted the so-called Geneva Declaration, which is the modern version of the Hippocratic Oath. When taking a professional oath, doctors use a modernized text of the Hippocratic Oath, or a text officially defined by the government, or a text accepted by their medical school. The fact of taking an oath can be an integral element of a doctor's legal status. In Ukraine, doctors – graduates of higher medical educational institutions take the Doctor's Oath, the text of which is approved by Presidential Decree. The use of the phrase Hippocratic Oath in everyday language or even in the medical field refers to the professional oath (Oath of the doctor) that the doctor took when acquiring his or her profession. The reference to the Hippocratic Oath is used as a link to indicate certain ethical problems in the medical profession in scientific and popular literature. Along with the Hippocratic Oath, similar professional oaths are common in related professions – veterinary medicine and pharmaceuticals. Like the doctor's oath, they are traditionally seen as an important tool that affects the ethical and axiological standards of the profession. Both in medicine and in other professional fields (for example, advocacy, notary, public prosecution, military affairs, law enforcement) where professional oaths are taken, developers of educational plans and syllabi of educational institutions should pay attention to the content of the relevant professional oaths. It is necessary to focus on the formation of relevant professional abilities in future graduates during their studies.
