Abstract

The article reconstructs the activities of the press section – editorial committee – of the B. Grinchenko Publishing Company in the Wetzlar camp of Ukrainian prisoners of war during the first fifteen months of its activity. The newspaper «Prosvitnyі Lystok» was founded by the representatives of the Union of Liberation of Ukraine and Ukrainian activists in the camp. Over a period of time, among the latter, a structure authorized to publish the newspaper was formed – the press section (editorial committee), whose members gradually took over the main technological operations – from content filling and distribution of the newspaper to its replication (after all the necessary equipment and a printing press were moved from the city printing house to the camp). The members of the press section took care not only of the publication of the newspaper – soon they organized the printing of various printing orders from other camp organizations, and also organized the publication of educational and journalistic literature, theater posters and programs, forms and postcards, etc. In this context, it is appropriate to note that for this (as well as for the circulation of the newspaper) the press section received regular financial subsidies from the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine. From the moment of its foundation, the magazine «Prosvitnyi Lystok» (later – «Hromadska Dumka») effectively performed the functions of a two-way communicator between the Ukrainian camp organization and the labor teams of the camp workers scattered over a large area, and in addition, it acted as an extremely effective means of national awareness of the captured Ukrainians, promoting them unification, first within the framework of separate circles, and then of the entire Ukrainian community. At the same time, he exerted a powerful mobilizing influence on the captured Ukrainians, thereby fulfilling all the tasks set before them by the ULU and the leadership of the Ukrainian camp organization.
