Abstract

The aim of the study is to reveal the main features of visualization of the event of the First World War on the front pages of the socio-political newspapers in Kyiv in 1914–1917. The methodology is based on the principles of historicism, systematicity, science and comprehensiveness. In our work we used the following general historical methods: historical comparative method, retrospective method, problem method. Also, the usage of such an interdisciplinary method as content analysis was relevant for our study. A number of visual sources that have not been published before have been put into scientific circulation. On the basis of a detailed analysis, it was possible to outline the main thematic areas of the images, to determine their semantic and informational task, as well as to trace qualitative and quantitative indicators. Thus, visual materials about the events of the World War I were represented by two groups of images: illustrations and photographs. The first were represented by satirical graphics and materials of ideological and symbolic nature, which formed a negative image of the enemy. Separate images were related to the socio-economic problems that overdyed in the country, including the issue of a military loan. A prominent place among the visual materials in the press was occupied by photographs. In most cases, portraits of the tsarist family, army heads, and political leaders of the allied states were published in the press. Some of the photographs showed social and domestic issues and had agitating, propaganda and patriotic character. As a result, the content of the publications of that time reveals that visual materials, compared to textual ones, played a secondary role and served as background, which intended only to attract the reader's attention and intensify his interest in certain aspects of the war.
