Abstract

The relevance of the study of the woman characters in time of war in the Ukrainian literary process is spurred by the need for both the support of the cultural and informational front, and for self-awareness of the national gender mentality. The purpose of the paper is to outline the models of the female characters in Natalka Vorozhbit's drama Bad Roads (2017). The findings of the study reveal in the image of a woman in Vorozhbyt's text a powerful female voice, poignant femininity, boundless patience, tolerance for the sake of love and the national idea. The war actualizes agency in the women’s system of characters in the play, brings a previously marginalized individual into post-colonial self-awareness, makes her an equal participant in the national history. The poetic features of Bad Roads are non/hidden autobiography, cinematic corporeality, grotesqueness, macabreness, and linguistic bilingualism. Divided into short stories and structured episodically both thematically and compositionally, the play is based on the motif of the road, which symbolizes self-development and the very life. The open ending of the last novella gives hope for the humanity of both minor characters and the nation as a whole.
