Abstract

The article is devoted to revealing specificity of interpretation of the category of modality in modern Japanese linguistics, as well as to the analysis of main components of the mechanism of categorization for the units possessing modality semantics in the Japanese language. A broad interpretation of the concept of modality in modern linguistics causes significant interpretative difficulties even at the stage of outlining this category in a certain national language, not to mention the description of the modal parameters of specific speech products. Unlike the modern, traditional understanding of the category of modality was based on the material of separate sentences, not sentences in speech, therefore modal distinctions and contrasts were made disregarding functioning of the sentence in discourse, which negatively affected the overall picture of the scientific understanding of this category. As a result of the study, it was established that modality in Japanese linguistics is interpreted mainly from the mental attitude of the speaker towards his message at the time of speech. Leading Japanese researchers attribute potentiality, inevitability, realism, and contingency to core modal values (inevitability is often considered the antithesis of contingency) and recommend distinguishing between the modality in relation to extraverbal reality and the modality in relation to the addressee of the message (objective and subjective modality). In addition, it turned out that the study of structural features of the Japanese sentence from a cognitive point of view, based on the theory of sentence modality by Charles Bally, according to which the judgment is based on two inseparable entities – dictum and modus, gives interesting results.
