Abstract
The following article presents a short sketch on the history of «Ukrainian Skytalets» magazine, which was replicated by Ukrainian Galician Army soldiers, initially in internment camps (Liberec-Josefov) in Czechoslovakia, and then from 1922 in Vienna. Founded as a monthly magazine, the magazine soon became an illustrated biweekly. Due to the fact that the publication of «Ukrainian Skytalets» was always unprofitable, the editors throughout the term of the «camp» existence of the magazine received subventions from the box office of the camp Cultural and Educational Club. During its existence, «Ukrainian Skytalets» has served as an information and spiritual link between various centers of Ukrainian military emigration to Czechoslovakia. The editorial office was aware of this extremely important task, aiming to shape interned soldiers into «fighters who will create a new Ukrainian belief by the power of the spirit, mettle and temper». The course of all-important events throughout the life of the interned army was constantly depicted in its columns; it regularly contained reports of various sections, courses and institutions of the Ukrainian camp organization, expenses cash calculations of the charity organization of the «Samopomich» camp members, etc. At the same time, the magazine carried out an important mobilization mission for Galician soldiers interned in the camps of the Czechoslovak Republic, calling for internees to organize themselves under emigration and to preserve themselves as part of the Ukrainian ethnic group, temporarily detached from its core. The articles and materials of the «Ukrainian Skytalets» drew the attention of the Czech society, as well as foreign Ukrainian communities, to the issues of interned Ukrainian soldiers and the high ideals of UGA which were consistently and steadfastly being defended in exile.
