Abstract
The motive for writing this publication was modern military challenges and the need to turn to the tragic lessons of the Second World War. Based on significant historiographical material developed by both direct participants of the events and well-known foreign historians, the authors focused their attention on the most important military and political events in Europe from the summer to the fall of 1940. The article focuses on the fact that by June 1940, Germany and its allies had brought under their control or occupied most of the countries of Western and Central Europe. A. Hitler was preparing for the implementation of his main plan – the “campaign to the East”. The Führer believed that after the capitulation of France, he could easily impose a separate peace on Great Britain and use this peace in the interests of the Third Reich. The authors emphasize the role of English society, the British government headed by W. Churchill, who refused any separate agreements and embarked on the path of fighting the Nazis. The publication reveals the main stages of the “Battle of Britain”, which unfolded on all fronts: in the sky, at sea, on the information front, and in the spheres of military production and intelligence. The authors provided a panoramic overview of the Anglo-German confrontation, which forced A. Hitler to eventually abandon the amphibious operation on the British Isles and focus his attention on the Barbarossa plan. In connection with the discourse existing in the literature about the real preparation of the Nazis for the "Sea Lion" operation, the authors present in the form of irrefutable arguments the facts stated in the memoirs or historical studies of W. Churchill, M. Albright, H. Baldwin, J. Fuller, B. Liddell Hart, W. Shirer, M. Hastings, L. Rees and others. German sources also played an important role for the author's concept: transcripts of A. Hitler's speeches, memoirs of Nazi leaders and military figures: J. Ribbentrop, W. Schellenberg, A. Speer, A. Kesselring, G. Blumentritt and others. Soviet-German and Soviet-English relations at the time of the "Battle of Britain" look irritating in the text of the article. Shocking facts show that the Stalinist USSR facilitated the actions of the German fleet in the confrontation with the Royal Navy. The authors' comprehensive review of foreign literature and sources allowed them to draw an important conclusion - the "Battle for England" was the first defeat of the Nazis in World War II
