Abstract

Sports popularity can be described as the degree of recognition and interest people have in a particular sport or sporting events in general. The popularity of sports can have a significant impact on cultural and economic aspects of society. The popularity of sports in the country can depend on many factors. The purpose of the study is to analyze the level of popularity of sports in Ukraine in recent years and compare it with world trends. The research used the following research methods: analysis of scientific and methodological literature and Internet sources, analysis of data from open information systems, methods of mathematical statistics. The Google Trends web application database was used to determine the popularity of sports in Ukraine and the world. The dynamics of the popularity of sports in Ukraine have similar trends to global trends, but there are certain peculiarities. Set the correlation coefficient between the indicators of popularity in Ukraine and the world at 0.64 (p<0.05). The results of the correlation analysis indicate a high level of correlation between the level of popularity in the world and Ukraine. From the analysis of the data, it can be stated that the relative popularity of sports in the world (75.4 points) is 40.4% higher than in Ukraine (53.7 points). The lower level of popularity of sports in Ukraine can be related to a significant number of the population of Ukraine, which does not have the opportunity to fully engage in sports due to lack of time, financial opportunities or access to sports infrastructure. In the world, the highest rate was in the period from March 2018 to February 2020, after which there is a significant decline in popularity caused by the pandemic by 37.9%. There was a recovery in the popularity of sports, but we can state a gradual decrease in the popularity of sports to 70.9% during the considered period. The world championships in football and the Olympic Games are the most popular in the world. In Ukraine, the drop in popularity caused by the pandemic was 38.7% (almost as much as in the world), while the drop caused by a full-scale invasion is less - 23.8%. It should also be noted that the highest level of popularity for the considered period was from 08.2021 to 02.2022.
