Abstract

The article is devoted to the outline of the problematic field of studying Ukrainian music of the first third of the 20th century and mapping its further research perspectives. The research methodology is based on a systematic approach, covering historical, historical-cultural, and system-analytic angles. A number of scientific methods are applied: historical, historical-cultural, historiographic analysis, chronological and descriptive. The scientific novelty of the article consists in substantiating the need to consider the stylistic specificity of Ukrainian music of the first third of the 20th century as an integral phenomenon in the context of European culture, and determining the research problems and perspectives. Conclusions. On the basis of the 21st-century research, the stages of the development of scientific thought devoted to consideration of Ukrainian music of the first third of the 20th century are traced. In musicology of the 2000s, the preference for the local history direction of research, which involves the study of the musical-historical process of a certain region (Galicia or Dnieper Ukraine), was specified. The primacy of the historical and cultural approach in these works was determined. In the works of the 2010s, a trend of synchronous analysis of the artistic achievements of the Galician and Eastern Ukrainian schools was revealed. The lack of objective arguments in the studies that raise the problem of non-national stylistic influences on the work of Ukrainian composers was revealed. The necessity of a detailed examination of the Ukrainian composers’ works in the context of European modernism is substantiated. The direction of genre-style comparative analysis is suggested that presupposes comparing the works of different genres written by Ukrainian composers with the corresponding genre samples of European modernists. The perspective of revealing the stylistic specificity of specificity of Ukrainian modernism as a result of the above analysis is projected.
