Abstract
In this article, the authors examine the social and religious adaptation of German Protestant colonies in Ukrainian lands under the Russian Empire from 1863 to 1914, relying heavily on diverse source materials to underscore their arguments. It is argued that these colonies managed to assimilate successfully in the predominantly foreign social and denominational environment in Ukraine. This success is attributed to their «tolerant» denominational status and a generally loyal attitude towards the established social system, state power structures, and the ethno-denominational setup. The authors critically view the Russian government’s decision at the beginning of the World War to deport Germans from Ukraine to the northern and eastern parts of the empire as actions driven by pseudo-security and political motivations rather than genuine concerns. The analysis divides the evolutionary trajectory of German colonization and the respective adaptation process into three stages: a phase of comprehensive encouragement of colonization leading to its pinnacle (1863 — late 1880’s), a period of moderating the expansion of German civilizational influence (late 1880’s — 1907), and a stage characterized by restrictions and forced regulation of life in the German colonies (1907–1914). Highlighting the aspects of social adaptation, the authors point out the creation of mono-ethnic, somewhat isolated communal-farm settlements and prioritize the growth of agriculture. The steady functioning of German primary schools, the preservation of native language in church activities and local administration, and a relationship marked by mutual distance yet reciprocal loyalty with the mainly Ukrainian local population, were distinctive features of this adaptation. In terms of religious adaptation, the German colonies tended to self-isolate within their religious communities, refrained from active proselytism, and fostered a familiar environment through support to local Shtundist-Baptist communities, marking the inception of Ukrainian Protestantism.
