Abstract
The article deals with the issue of the theoretical and practical foundations of the formation of English social media slang. The data of the Android Headlines (Mobile Review) portal survey conducted in 2021 regarding the quantitative indicators of social media users are presented. The periods in the history of the development of slang that have specific characteristics are outlined (XVI century – slang is used only by representatives of certain groups (criminals, beggars); XVII century – slang units are associated with immorality and ignorance; XVIII century – slang appears on TV screens in comedy films; 19th century – used by young people in everyday communication; 20th century – has a scope of use by a limited group of people, but by all representatives of society). The essence of the concepts “slang”, and “social media slang” as linguistic phenomena is revealed. Thus, in the study, the concept of “social media slang” is considered a dialect derived from the words of the English language, jargon, a set of phrases and sayings that have a narrow application and are not grammatically correct words in the language. The semantics of social media slang, which is characterized by the tendency “to call things indirectly or figuratively”, especially with the help of metaphors; metonymy; synecdoche; euphemism; and irony The typology of English social media slang is characterized, such as words with identical or extremely close meanings – synonyms; iterative; combination of two separate words into one complex word; use of various abbreviations. A visualized classification scheme of slang units according to the method of creation is given: metaphorical reinterpretation, word formation, doubling, word splitting, phonetic distortion, conversion, reversion; suffix word-form, prefix word-form, telescoping, compaction, abbreviation, acronym. Attention is drawn to the fact that the comments of social media users at the lexical level have special qualities, such as emotional exclamations, repetitions, sound imitations, emoticons, and ellipses.
