Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the relationship between values and self-esteem. The analysis of the research conducted in this area showed that values not only act as benchmarks with which a person compares himself. Priority values also determine the direction in which personal development takes place. After a person succeeds in implementing values, self-esteem increases. Thus, in the study of N.A. Samojlik found that a high level of values (in a certain area) correlated with high self-esteem related to this area. The research presented in the article studied how the importance of a value and the ability (or inability) to implement this value in life influence self-esteem. In the presented in the article research examines impact the level of the realization (or non-realization) of a priority value in life on self-evaluation. As a hypothesis, it was assumed that the high importance of the value and the impossibility of its realization determines depressed self-esteem. The following tests were used in the study: the Dembo-Rubinshtein self-esteem research method and the "Level of correlation of value and accessibility in different life spheres" method (as modified by I. Subashkevych). The research was conducted via the Internet using Google form. 43 people aged 17 to 44 were interviewed. By using ANOVA, pairs of groups of respondents were compared. The following pairs were compared: 1) a) persons in whom the high priority of the value was combined with its high realization in life (the score was above arithmetic mean) b) persons whose priority of values and their realization in life was less than mean; 2) a) persons in whom high value priority was combined with non-realization of value in life (the score was above arithmetic mean) and b) persons in whom the degree of non-realization of priority values was less than mean. The obtained results show that realized in life (as well as unrealized) priority values are the factors that determinate the self-esteem. In particular, it was established that: 1) priority values that were realizations increase self-esteem; 2) priority values that were not realized in life - have depressed the self-esteem.
