Abstract
This historical-psychological study is for the first time dedicated to the analysis of the psychological ideas of the outstanding Ukrainian psychologist Mykola Yakovych Grot, regarding the figure of the great thinker of the past and present – Renatus Cartesius, i.e. Rene Descartes. According to Wikipedia, R. Descartes (31.03.1596 – 11.02.1650) is “a French philosopher, scientist and mathematician who is considered by many to be a fundamental figure in the emergence of modern philosophy and science. Mathematics was central to his method of inquiry, and he united the previously separate branches of geometry and algebra into analytic geometry. Descartes spent most of his working life in the Dutch Republic, first serving in the Dutch state army and later becoming the leading intellectual of the Dutch Golden Age. Despite the fact that he served in a Protestant state and was later classified as a deist by his critics, Descartes was a Roman Catholic.” The aim of the article is to analyze the psychological ideas of the outstanding Ukrainian psychologist M. Grot in his scientific work “On the Life and Activities of Descartes”. As a result of the research, the author comes to the conclusion that the main psychological idea of M. Grot in his work “On the life and activities of Descartes” is that René Descartes is not just a philosopher, but also a great psychologist, whose philosophical works are important for psychological science. Descartes is a genius and his brilliant views can serve as methodological foundations for modern psychology. R. Descartes proposed a method of thinking, four rules for the scientific study of phenomena. Their essence is that 1) it is not necessary to accept as true what causes doubts; 2) it is necessary to apply analysis in the study of phenomena; 3) deduction should be used; 4) it is necessary to carefully check and draw complete conclusions when conducting scientific research. All these ideas of Descartes are directly related to psychology and psychological research. But at the same time, we can come to the conclusion that most personality theories raise doubts about their scientific nature, because they cannot be tested experimentally and, according to the researcher P. Nesterenko, “can be both confirmed and refuted at the same time”, which really shows that modern psychology is “half empirical science and half philosophy”. (P. Nesterenko).
