Abstract

The image of press and pressmen, the perception of professional ethics and the role of the mass media in the West are actually created by many factors. Dominant among them is the activity of this social institution itself, but we cannot forgo the role of fiction and films as production of mass culture, which to a certain extent have added to the creation of positive image of representatives of mass media in the society. Mass culture is named the social phenomenon of XX century, its researchers stress its ability to manipulate human conscience, to create social values and public figures etc. The aim of this article is the analysis of a collective image of mass media and journalists as created by mass culture and which influences the evaluation of the society of the real mass media. Writers and filmmakers were focusing their attention on the right of journalists to convey to their audience the actual true-to-life information, even if it does not suit the government position or access to which is limited or restricted at the time of a military conflict. They kept reminding the society about the danger of concentrating “the information resource” and placing it at chosen hands, the possibility of the mass media owners to form the opinion of the society, to push the country towards armed conflicts; envisaged a possible pressure of the state on the freedom of speech and the rights of the free press. Journalists, described in their works, by all means strive to keep to rules and canons of their profession; they are often depicted as positive characters, sometimes even as superheroes. For the mass conscience, partly due to the influence of the works of mass culture, dominant is a positive image of “the mass media of the free world” and their representatives, which as often as not helps non-critical perception of any information, provided by such sources of mass information. Though, as experience proves, even the free press ought not to be totally and completely trusted, especially at times of crises and information conflicts, so characteristic of our times
