Abstract

The article is aimed at the problem of attitude towards borrowed elements, in particular lexical ones, in the Ukrainian language. A certain caution of society and the individual towards the active flow of foreign elements is a kind of defensive reaction. A foreign word is first of all a carrier of a different culture that is not always harmonious with the linguistic culture into which it enters. A large number of borrowed lexical elements can, according to many researchers, transform the national "map of the world", destroy a holistic cultural shell. In this case, the flow of foreign units acquires the properties of pathogenic elements. The article adheres to the position that it is necessary to distinguish between the linguistic sign and its perception by society in research. Therefore, the purpose of the proposed study is to analyze the main (mass) reactions to foreign borrowings, which are found in fiction and journalistic texts since Ukraine gained independence. The study emphasizes that despite the diversity of the borrowing process in the Ukrainian language of the late 20th century, it is necessary to note two opposite trends that primarily determine the functioning of foreign units and their use in speech. This is, on the one hand, the understanding of the need to fill in terminological and conceptual gaps and the perception of the activation of borrowings from other languages (primarily English) as an indirect manifestation of freedom and open policy. On the other hand, the opposition of the mass linguistic and cultural consciousness to the invasion of foreign elements as a pathogenic factor that destroys national mental foundations. It is also stated that over three decades, the political and cultural background on which the penetration and assimilation of foreign units takes place has changed. The dominant factor in these processes is internationalization. Currently, we have a social and-cultural situation that contributes to the spread of various borrowed elements in the Ukrainian language. Among the key factors of "promotion": an open information space, the ability to use foreign information and cultural products; the widespread involvement of the population, especially young people, in IT, computer games, the mass use of specific "digital" products with an English-language interface; state accents on strengthening the study of English in schools and universities; requirements for English proficiency for applicants for certain positions in commercial and state structures, etc.
