Abstract
The article examines the approaches of foreign scholars of the early twenty-first century to the study of student movements of the 1960s. It is found that the topic of youth protests is of constant interest. A feature of the study of student protest movements is the interdisciplinary nature of research approaches. Today, scholars are no longer satisfied with theses about the “generation gap”, “marginalization revolt”, “sectarianism” and psychopathology of individual students, poor material conditions, etc. They state the international “wave of protest” of the 1960s, which was catalyzed by students. In particular, the authors describe the historiography of the problem, highlighting the views of contemporary researchers on student protest movements of the 1960s in Western Europe and the United States. The latest research reflections of scholars are aimed at clarifying the underlying factors of the emergence of student movements, correlating the age parameters of participants with the overall dynamics of movements, the impact of youth protests on the international political situation, summarizing the results of student activism, and highlighting models of social memory regarding the “generation of the 1960s”. The important role of the university as an environment for activating students' cognitive processes regarding identities, ideologies, and membership in subcultural groups is established, which, in the context of the accumulation of socio-political discontent, contributes to the mobilization of protests. The scientists have proved that students feel the “calming effect” of higher education and participate mainly in non-violent demonstrations. It is found that the student protests of 1967 in Czechoslovakia showed students the possibilities for democratic and liberal changes in society. It is proved that student protest is still an important component of the identity of the University of Nanterre in Paris. At the same time, the contradictory historical memory (“myth of '68”) about the events of the “red” May 1968 in French society proves the importance of its proper scientific historicization.
