Abstract

The article provides a theoretical analysis of the concept of "selfworth", which is an actual problem in modern conditions, since a formed sense of self-worth is an important condition for the psychological stability and emotional stability of an individual, accordingly, an insufficient sense of one's own worth undermines a person's confidence in his ability to overcome life's difficulties. The volumes of concepts and the interpretation of the corresponding terms in English and German languages are analyzed, the need to distinguish and clarify the meanings invested by the authors of English-language theories in the concepts characterizing certain aspects of self-identification of the individual is indicated. An analysis of existing approaches to understanding the self-worth of an individual: A. Adler, E. Burn, S. Coopersmith, J. Stewart and V. Joynes, M. James and D. Jongvard, T. E. Harris, V. Satir, A. Langle, V. Oaklander, T. White, L. Bourbo, J. Crocker, L. Prosandeeva, an attempt was made to identify common and opposite trends. The psychological meaning of the concept of "self-worth " is clarified, its difference from the concept of self-esteem is outlined. It was found that such concepts as "feeling of inferiority" and «OK-ness» are synonymous with self-esteem. The analysis of scientists' views on the concept of "self-worth" made it possible to highlight the components of the understanding of this concept: self-worth is "deep knowledge", that is, an often-unconscious basic attitude experienced by an individual as a sense of self-worth. It is a persistent feeling that a person in his uniqueness is good and valuable, deserving of love, attention and respect of others. Unlike self-esteem, self-worth does not depend on any criteria and achieved results.
