Abstract
At the beginning of hostilities, both Austro-Hungarian and Russian generals understood the strategic importance of the city of Leva. For Austria-Hungary, Lviv was the center of the region, and its loss would lead to pessimism within the army and the state. Russian military propaganda was reduced to the conquest of Lviv, the liberation of the Slavs from German rule and the end of the affairs of the Moscow tsars with the collection of Russian lands. Against the background of military battles, the little-noticed stories of Lviv residents, for whom the main goal became the question of life and death, are lost. During the 293 days of Russian occupation, Lviv was subjected to rapid Russification in order to create a mental connection between the city and other parts of the Romanov empire. For this reason, in April 1915, Emperor Nicholas II visited the city. A ruble zone was maintained in Lviv, Russian schools were opened, Russian theater troupes from Kyiv and Petrograd came to the city. The Russian occupation administration did everything possible to turn the captured territories of Austria-Hungary into a Russian province. At the same time, all Polish culture was subjected to strict censorship. The article highlights how the official authorities of Lviv, led by the city’s president Tadeusz Rutovskyi, resisted Russian cultural expansion. Tadeusz Rutowski and his team sought to maintain the pre-war prestige of the city in extremely difficult conditions, when the city left the internal Austrian market and had not yet been incorporated into the Russian market. That created an economic vacuum in the city, which was actively filled by speculators. Also, the number of lootings has increased significantly in the city. In order to counteract them, the City Militia was created, the costs of which exceeded the costs of the Austrian period by two times.
