Abstract
Ukrainian historian, archeographer, archivist, source researcher, and teacher Volodymyr Shcherbyna (1850–1936) was a member of the Historical Society of Nestor the Chronicler, the Kyiv Society of Antiquities and Arts, the Kyiv Society for the Protection of Ancient Monuments and Arts, a corresponding member of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, a public figure. He belonged to the representatives of the older generation of the Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych, which since the fourth quarter of the 19th century was an integral part of the School of Historians of the Kyiv St. Volodymyr University. The Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych gave the world about forty outstanding and talented scholars, who made up the elite of Ukrainian historical science of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Volodymyr Shcherbyna took an honorable place among them. The Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych was distinguished by the complexity of the research, the thoroughness of the source base and the scientific apparatus of research, and the deep insight into the essence of the problem. Volodymyr Shcherbyna followed this scientific approach to research in his scientific activities all his life. He was the author of more than a hundred scientific works on the poorly developed problems of Kyiv studies, the right-bank Ukrainian Cossacks of the 18th century, the Haydamak movements, memories of Volodymyr Antonovych, Leonid Dobrovolskyi, Ivan Kamanin, Yakiv Shulgin, about St. Volodymyr Kyiv University in the 1870s. The scholar published a number of documents on the history of Ukraine and Kyiv. Volodymyr Shcherbyna left a noticeable mark in studying the Ukrainian past and was one of the most prominent Kyiv historians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the article, we analyzed the works of Ukrainian historians who studied the personality of Volodymyr Shcherbyna from 1926 to 2020. This made it possible to conclude that the historian's life, scientific legacy, public, educational, and pedagogical activities remain insufficiently researched, and the number of modern historians engaged in Shcherbino studies is small.
