Abstract
Ivan Kamanin (1850–1921) was a Ukrainian historian, archeographer, archivist, source researcher, paleographer, and public figure. He was a member of the Historical Society of Nestor the Chronicler, the Kyiv Society of Antiquities and Arts, the Kyiv Society for the Protection of Ancient Monuments and Arts, a corresponding member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv, the Ukrainian Scientific Society in Kyiv, the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. He belonged to the representatives of the older generation of the Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych, which since the fourth quarter of the 19th century was an integral part of the School of Historians of the Kyiv St. Volodymyr University. The Kyiv School of Historians of Volodymyr Antonovych gave the world about forty outstanding and talented scholars, who made up the elite of Ukrainian historical science of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ivan Kamanin took an honorable place among them. The scholar was a prominent figure of his time, a man of encyclopedic knowledge, many years of his fruitful scientific activity and a large legacy testify to the fact that he was an authoritative scholar, known and respected by many famous figures of his time, and belonged to the scientific elite of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ivan Kamanin was the author of more than 300 scientific works on the history of Ukraine in the 16th and 17th centuries, on archeology and archival studies. He worked forty-five years in the Kyiv Central Archive of Ancient Acts, where he worked his way up from an assistant librarian to an archivist and a director of the archive. He participated in the publication "Archive of South-Western Russia". The historian was an active contributor to the "Kievskaya starina" magazine, a participant in archaeological congresses, worked in the commissions of the All Ukrainian Academy of Sciences for the compilation of historical-geographical and biographical dictionaries of Ukraine, and was one of the founders of the Kyiv Provincial Scientific Archival Commission (1914). The scholar left a large documentary legacy - an array of published and unpublished works on Ukrainian, Russian, and world history, archival studies, archaeography, paleography, archeology, filigree studies, memoirs, and a complex of private correspondence. The works of Ukrainian historians who studied the personality of Ivan Kamanin from 1926 to 2021 we analyzed. The conducted research made it possible to conclude that the scholar's life, his multifaceted scientific, public, and educational activities, and scientific legacy remain insufficiently researched, and require comprehensive study and popularization. A complex, systematic, thorough study of the personality of Ivan Kamanin awaits young Ukrainian historians of the 21st century.
