Abstract

The purpose of this article is to identify the author's artistic variants of representation of the alienation motif in the stories Alone, All Alone and The Bell by Borys Hrinchenko. The choice of the objects of analysis is determined by the common motif of the intended and/or realized suicide, which we interpreted as the culmination of the alienation of the orphan protagonists of these works. The study uses typological, comparative, and psychoanalytic research methods, and studies of trauma. The study outlines the ‘alien space’ and forms of alienation in the stories Alone, All Alone and The Bell; reveals their correlation with identity issues; conducts a taxonomy of artistic models of alienation; and establishes typological resonances with the Western European context. It is generalized, that the motif of alienation in these stories structures a artistic model of the relationship between a child character and society, when the heroine loses her identity. In the first model (Alone, All Alone), belonging to a low level in the social hierarchy, together with the state of orphanhood, leads to the heroine's isolation in a society that lacks empathy. The way for the heroine to get rid of the excessive burden of alienation is to ‘reunite’ with her late mother. Thus, suicide is a marker of the depth of alienation and, at the same time, a form of escapism from the ‘alien’/’hostile’ world. In the ‘child-society’ model presented in The Bell, alienation is a stage in the process of the loss of identity. The author explores a situation where the orphaned heroine receives external (material) protection but instead not only loses internal protection, but also experiences a step-by-step displacement of the self and the formation of a new identity. This turns into a tragedy, which gives rise to the child’s suicidal thoughts. Thus, the stories Alone, All Alone and The Bell are Borys Hrinchenko's artistic studies of the psychology of an orphan character in borderline situations. These situations are provoked by traumas such as the loss of a loved one or the displacement of the heroine's self, intensified by social pressure, humiliation of her own human and national dignity, and marked by gender and psychological (age) peculiarities.
