Abstract

The article tackles the representations of magic in Emma Andievska’s fairy tales / parables translated in German. The focus is made on the nature of the subjects of magic, often anthropomorphized, and the magical artifacts. Both shape the processes of magic in the selected texts. The correlation of everyday magic and philosophical reflections in the parables of the Ukrainian storyteller is studied. Andievska’s fairy tales use magic as a transformation of the environment under the guise of sorcery to work out basic human values, which are nation-building for Ukrainians, in particular, freedom („Das Märchen von dem Stier und dem Schmetterling“, „Das Märchen vom Quasselprotz“), hope („Das Märchen von den Ichichen“), humanism („Das Märchen von dem Mann, den die Zweifel plagten“). Magic in the fairy tales by Emma Andievska denotes the spiritual and celebrates intelligence, hard work, strength and humanism of the Ukrainian spirit.
