Abstract
The Second World War (1939 – 1945) had a fundamental impact on all spheres of society in the 20th century. The post-war world was mostly convinced that there would never be another war. The first quarter of the XXI century. cruelly refuted these frivolous considerations, recalling the philosophical truth: “If a person forgets about war, war will never forget about him”. Reasons for war, the means by which war is waged may change historically. Markers that always accompany large and small wars remain unchanged: ideology, politics, tactics and strategy, political economy of war, moral state of society, etc. Approaching the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the modern military challenges that really faced the world at the turn of the 20th – 21st centuries. increase the extraordinary interest of the public in the events of the past war. The proposed article is an attempt not only to find historical analogies with the past, but also to rethink the past from the standpoint of modernity. The authors take into account the fact that the proposed topic has one of the largest historiographies in the world and is constantly in the range of active scientific discourse. A number of research tasks, which the authors have set themselves, are aimed at refuting myths or stereotypes about the Second World War, which were especially abundant during the years of the “Cold War”. The article focuses on the fact that the main causes of the war were the desire of totalitarian and authoritarian regimes to rewrite history in their favor. On the other hand, the liberal democracies of the 1920s and 1930s were unable to create adequate safeguards against fascist aggression, Nazism, and a misanthropic dictatorship. The authors critically evaluate the political and military decisions of the parties, analyze the most famous strategic operations that are useful for modern military. The article emphasizes that the universal experience of the Second World War consists in understanding the important factors of victory: the unity of democratic peoples in repelling aggression, non-standard strategic and tactical decisions, civil unity of society that defends its civilizational choice, the right to freedom and one's own life
