Abstract
Abstract. This article examines the work of the Argentine composer, the founder of the «nuevo tango» genre, Astor Piazzolla. It identifies the influence of his music on Ukrainian folk-instrumental performing art. Based on the analysis of arrangements of musical works for ensembles, it characterizes the features of the composer's style, harmonic language, polyphonic writing, principles of constructing musical dramaturgy, and means of musical expressiveness. In order to determine the evolutionary changes in the author's style, works from the mature and late periods of the composer’s creativity were selected for analysis in arrangements for ensemble. The compositional style of Astor Piazzolla crystallized over several decades. Numerous factors and circumstances influenced the formation of his musical language; some were coincidental – such as encounters with Carlos Gardel, Arthur Rubinstein, and Igor Stravinsky – while others resulted from the composer’s rigorous work with scores and arrangements, his collaboration with the orchestra of Anibal Troilo, and his studies under A. Ginastera and Nadia Boulanger. In the proposed article, we examine the stylistic features of Astor Piazzolla’s music through the lens of ensemble arrangements from his mature and late creative periods. The most characteristic traits of the Argentine composer’s style include the use of methods for polyphonizing musical textures, where the polyphonic vertical is defined by the synthesis of functional classical-romantic harmony with elements of jazz harmony. Furthermore, the composer’s harmonic language is marked by the extensive use of poly-chordal constructions, modulating sequences, and alterations, which weaken the functional interdependence between chords and allow the composer to be more mobile in tonal terms. Given the active interest in the composer’s work within the Ukrainian academic folk-instrumental performing community, an important task is to study the harmonic language, polyphonic writing, principles of dramaturgy, genre characteristics of «nuevo tango», and the individual style of Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, which will be addressed in our upcoming research.
