Abstract
Decolonization of the cultural space involves the rejection of Soviet narratives, including those about ‘the Great Patriotic War.’ The purpose of the research is to explore how women’s literature can influence the decolonization processes in Ukrainian culture by telling about women’s past experiences of the war. The study analyzes the female experience presented in modern Ukrainian women’s novels (combatants, women in occupied territories, deportees) and compares it with real experience, as historians see it. Thus, the research demonstrates how the images and ideas are shaped in the situation current for the writers. The memory of the experience of female combatants is examined based on the novels “Museum of Abandoned Secrets” by O. Zabuzhko (2009) and “Because It Hurts” by Ye. Senik (2023). The understanding of women’s participation in armed conflict evolves from interpreting it as a mistake to recognizing it as a valuable experience. The deconstruction of the memory of the occupation is analyzed through the novels “Amadoka” by Sofiia Andrukhovych, “Unbelievable. Ode to Joy” by Iren Rozdobudko, “Her Empty Places” by Anna Hruver, “Me, You, and Our Drawn and Undrawn God” by Tetiana Pakhomova, and “He Called Her Sandra” by Daryna Hnatko. These works refer to the experience of the national struggle, the Holocaust, and romantic relationship with the occupiers. The experience of deportation is analyzed through the novels “Faride” by Iren Rozdobudko, “The Crimson Color of Eternity” by Natalia Hurnytska, “Yeva’s Apples” by Khrystyna Kotsira. By showing the cruelty of groundless repression against women who have no power, women’s novels undermine and reject the imperial narrative, which cannot exist without the authority of justice
