Abstract
The article is devoted to the 150th anniversary of Vladimir Ipolytovych Lipsky, whose activities are concerned field floral, plant taxonomy, botanical geography and the creation of botanical gardens. He studied the vegetation of the East, the Caucasus, flora of the Central Asia, collected huge herbaria and collections that are currently stored in botanical institutions of St. Petersburg, Kyiv. He visited nearly every continents and one of the first described the vegetation of Indonesia, Tunisia, Algeria, traveled to Ceylon, Japan, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and North America. In 1919, V.I. Lipsky appointed Vice President and later President of the Academy of Sciences. In 1928 he became director of the Odessa Botanical Gardens, then scientific advisor. He proposed to place in Kiev Botanical Gardens on the slopes of the Dnieper River, which is now called the National Botanical Garden.
