Abstract
The research presented in the article examines the causes of anxiety related to professional activity among novice psychologists. Analysis of the literature shows that anxiety in a consultant psychologist can lead to many negative consequences, such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, aggressiveness, disruption of relations with colleagues, professional maladjustment, and psychological regression during counseling, which leads to loss of contact with the client, etc. Anxiety can also have another, more positive aspect: a specialist can use low-level anxiety for professional self-improvement. Therefore, when training future psychologists, it is necessary to take into account the reasons that may cause professional anxiety in the future, to promote the acquisition of the professional experience needed for young specialists to feel more competent, to teach the constructive use of professional anxiety. To study the causes of anxiety, we developed a questionnaire. The Competitive State Anxiety Inventory – 2 (CSAI-2) was modified to diagnose novice psychologists' anxiety before the upcoming consultation with the client. The Spielberger State-trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were also used to assess anxiety. The research sample consisted of 40 novice psychologists. The CSAI-2 (modified for research purposes) has been shown to have satisfactory internal consistency and criterion validity in the examined sample. In the study, it was found that high anxiety and worry are associated with a lack of practical work experience; perception of their theoretical knowledge as insufficient for professional activity; assessment of self-preparedness to work as not enough; and assessment of self as not corresponding with professional standards. Higher anxiety in novice psychologists is also associated with a feeling of insufficient support from colleagues, with signs of imperfect professional activity (clients report dissatisfaction with recommendations, colleagues' remarks are upsetting, and discussing the case causes intense negative emotions). Also, reverse processes are observed – low anxiety is associated with probable errors at work
