Abstract
Abstract. This article explores the phonetic aspects of etiquette speech in English, focusing on how various speech features contribute to perceptions of politeness and formality in communication. Key elements discussed include intonation patterns, stress and emphasis, articulation, vowel quality, speech rate, and the use of polite forms. Intonation, particularly rising and falling patterns, plays a significant role in conveying friendliness or authority. Clear enunciation and gentle articulation enhance the approachability of speech, while controlled speech rates and strategic pauses reflect thoughtfulness and respect. Additionally, the article addresses the influence of cultural variations on polite speech, highlighting how regional accents and dialects shape phonetic expressions of politeness. By understanding these phonetic features, speakers can effectively navigate social interactions, fostering respectful and considerate communication.
