Abstract

Chinese literature of the 1980s was in dire need of profound changes to restore its subjectivity rather than serve only ideological interests, to emphasize the value and artistic quality of works. Writers sought to move away from the imposed realist model as the only acceptable one in literary creativity, so that the study and delineation of human nature could become more profound and convincing. The reception of modern realist literature from the West in a way opened a new page in contemporary Chinese literature, prompting many writers to try new techniques of writing that were quite strange to Chinese readers. Can Xue (real name Deng Xiaohua (邓小华), born in 1953) is one of the most creative representatives of Chinese women’s literature, who makes the reader plunge into the world of the incomprehensible, and her work is quite shocking and hardly perceived by a wide readership. The article analyzes the specifics of the ugly in the figurative system of the stories «A Soap Bubble in Dirty Water», «The Ox» and «The Hut on the Hill». It is found that this «anti-aesthetics» is related to the problems of these works, where the author depicts an absurd, deformed and nightmarish world with feelings of gloom, uncertainty, fear, anxiety, which the characters live with, hating each other. But the writer’s goal is to explore human nature and the search for inner freedom. In her works, Can Xue «challenges» the generally accepted standards of beauty and cultural norms in order to undermine the dominant ideology by criticizing social values. The writer follows a transcendental view of literature and art, creates a literature of «human nature» in phenomenological terms, and rejects sociological judgments of «right» and «wrong», «good» and «evil» in the human personality.
