Abstract
The purpose of this article is to outline the figure of the narrator in the autobiographical essays by Can Xue and Halyna Pahutiak as the embodiment of such a model of existence as “a woman in art”. The study proposes a typology of essays by Halyna Pahutiak and Can Xue; characterizes the features of “meta-essays” as a source of the author’s concepts; and identifies the issues and artistic features of the essays that reveal the model of “a woman and literature”. The object of the analysis is the cycle of essays “Autobiography” by Can Xue from the book “Artistic Retribution. Literary Notes by Can Xue” and “Autobiography with no Dates and Almost No Facts” by Halyna Pahutiak. The research methods used are comparative, typological, and psychoanalytic. In the course of the studyit was observed that both Can Xue and Halyna Pahutiak are reserved artists who do not share information about their personal lives with the audience, leaving few allusions in the texts of their works, but focus on the specifics of the artistic process in general. The essays by Can Xue and Halyna Pahutiak, where the subject of reflection is the creative process and the figure of the artist, are called “metaessays”. Depending on the object of philosophical and aesthetic research, we distinguish among them those that reveal a self-analysis of their work – autobiographies where the figure of a female artist comes to the fore. The second type of essays is devoted to the creative biography of national or foreign writers where the range of aesthetic preferences of the authors is determined through the female narrative. It has been proved that in her autobiographical essays Halyna Pahutiak tends to use the fictionalized essay while Can Xue tends to literary essays, conducting a philological study of artistic phenomena. What is common to the autobiographical essays of both writers is the voicing of the key provisions of their conceptions of art – humanistic orientation, critical view, harmony of content and form as a result of painstaking work on the text and “inner critic”, intertextual and intermedial elements that help the authors to outline the formulas of artistic identity
