Abstract

The process of acquiring professional competence and recognition in the professional environment of doctors by graduates of women's medical courses of the late 1870s has been studied, which will reveal in a certain way their professional culture, as well as the procedural registration and regulatory consolidation by the state authorities of the Russian Empire of their qualifications in the medical field and the corresponding legal guarantees. An influential factor in advancing the legal capacity of women doctors was the volunteer work of residents - graduates of medical courses in military field hospitals of the Russian-Turkish war of 1877–1878. Arriving at the Balkan front, the "students" demonstrated the acquired professional competence and publicly testified: a woman is capable of treating, and moreover, regardless of the gender of the patients. The transformation of the "emancipatory" views of eyewitnesses to the selfless work of female doctors in helping wounded and sick soldiers had a positive impact on the position of the professional environment, public opinion and stereotypes of contemporaries regarding women's medical treatment. It was recognized as fair and socially expedient to assign them the qualification of female doctors and the same rights as male doctors to independent medical practice (without restrictions on their gender and age). The qualification of a female doctor in the Russian Empire, established by law and certified by a special breastplate "Zh.V.", became a precedent in Europe.
