Abstract

The article explores the distinctive features of authors’ interpretations of the “father and daughter” theme in contemporary Ukrainian poetry. The substantial artistic potential of this theme, its development within Ukrainian literary tradition, and the enduring demand for the image of the father as a protector and his role in shaping a daughter's identity underscore the relevance of this study. The primary objective is to analyze the works of contemporary poets dedicated to the father-daughter relationship. To achieve this,the study addresses several tasks: outlining the connection with literary traditions, particularly with Borys Hrinchenko’s exploration of the “father and daughter” theme; examining individual authorial approaches; identifying central motifs and key images; and male narrative perspectives on this theme. The corpus of th’ study comprises poem“ by O. Berdnyk, I. Krylovets, S. Krymskyi, S. Borchuk, V. Shevchuk, I. Smyk, P. Vyshebaba, and I. Sychov. Common external markers include male authorship and the predominance of the poetic form of epistles, signified using the term “daughter” in their titles. Shared internal markers are the motifs of paternal love for a daughter, which intersect with: (1) folklore traditions of intimacy in parent-child relationships, and (2) autobiographical elements reflecting the authors’ experiences of fatherhood, including its joys and challenges. The analysis reveals that contemporary poets, consciously or unconsciously, draw on the artistic tradition of the “father and daughter” theme, which Borys Hrinchenko notably developed. This tradition is characterized by a positive conceptual model encompassing various aspects of the father-daughter relationship: psycho-emotional (“father as the protector of the daughter’s life and safety”), cognitive (“father as a mentor”), socio-ideological (“father as an ally”), creative-artistic (“father as a companion in creativity”), and gender-social (“father as the ideal male figure”). O. Berdnyk, in his mid-20th-century poetic cycle Poems for Donia, extended Hrinchenko’s conceptualization, which contemporary male poets have further developed. The study applies a typology of chronotopes to these texts, differentiating between the “father and daughter” in a chronotope of peace and in a chronotope of war. The findings indicate that the first group of authors (I.Krylovets, I. Smyk, S. Borchuk) predominantly employs folklore imagery to portray father-daughter relations, emphasizing motifs of love and care. The motif of a daughter’s birth as a turning point that facilitates deeper self-reflection and philosophical insight also emerges prominently. In contrast, the second group (P. Vyshebaba and I. Sychov) explores paternal feelings amid the dramatic context of war, with the motif of separation adding complexity. For these authors, who are also combatants, the love for their daughters is equated with love for the Motherland they strive to protect. The blending of intimate and civic motifs creates a unique narrative space where the father-daughter theme transcends the autobiographical and becomes a broader affirmation of the commitment to safeguarding all children of Ukraine, for whose lives and freedom they fight.
