Abstract

The purpose of the study is to clarify the situation of the Ukrainian political emigration and Russian monarchist forces in Bulgaria in 1921 through the prism of Colonel Vasyl Fylonovych's report to the Chief Ataman of the UPR Troops. The methodology of the study is based on the principles of historicism, scientism and systematics. General scientific (analysis, synthesis and generalisation), special historical (historical-critical, problematic and chronological) and source studies (archival heuristics, external and internal criticism of sources) methods were used. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the introduction into scientific circulation of V. Fylonovych's report to S. Petliura of 21 August 1921, which deals with the formation of the organisational structure of the Ukrainian emigration in the context of the Russophilic Bulgarian authorities and the numerous Russian emigrant environment. The document has not been published before. It was discovered in the Military Historical Bureau of the Central Military Archives of Poland. The prospect of further research is to update the documents that reveal the peculiarities of the formation of Ukrainian political emigration to Bulgaria at the beginning of the interwar period. They will help to identify the main characters and organisational structure of emigration in this Balkan country. Conclusions. The research and published report of Colonel Vasyl Fylonovych to the Chief Ataman of the UPR Troops Symon Petliura of 21 August 1921 reveals the process of creating the first public organisations in Bulgaria by Ukrainian emigrants. It identifies the initiators and leaders of the Ukrainian community, the Sich Society, and the Cultural and Educational Circle, highlights the composition, moods, and plans of a group of Russian monarchists to return to Ukraine, and reveals the attitude of the Bulgarian authorities and population to the Ukrainian national liberation movement in general and the Ukrainian emigration in particular.
