Abstract

The article is dedicated to analyzing the activities of Ukrainian libraries and archives in preserving national memory amid contemporary globalization challenges. The essence of national memory is explored as a set of collective representations, values, symbols, historical events, and figures that shape a nation’s shared identity, are transmitted across generations, and influence societal consciousness. The distinctions between historical and national memory are analyzed from the perspective of their subjects, the nature of information, forms of preservation, and functional purpose. It is noted that social and communication institutions play a significant role in shaping social memory processes by reinforcing narratives that contribute to national consolidation. The importance of social networks as a transformative cultural force is emphasized, highlighting their considerable impact on social norms, political engagement, and cultural trends in society. The key aspects of social networks' impact on the preservation of national memory have been identified, including the popularization of significant events, figures, and symbols that shape national identity; the mobilization of society around commemorative dates that are crucial for nation-building; the dismantling of hostile historical propaganda myths; and the enhancement of interpersonal communication among users, facilitating the exchange of personal life experiences, which ultimately contributes to the formation of collective memory. The article highlights leading Ukrainian libraries and archives that actively represent their activities on social networks. The importance of educational efforts by university libraries on social media is emphasized, as they play a crucial role in shaping the value foundations of national memory among the youth in the digital age. The pivotal role of digitizing national historical and cultural heritage and its further promotion among social network users is also underscored as a means of preserving national memory.
