Abstract

The article deals with the peculiarities of developing the intercultural competence of future philologists in the process of teaching translation studies. The ideas of modern scholars on intercultural competence and its role in the process of training future specialists in the field of foreign languages are analyzed. It is found that translation studies play an extremely important role in the development of intercultural competence, for future philologists acting as both translators and foreign language teachers mediate between different languages and cultures. Future philologists should be able to reproduce the original text as part of a foreign language culture through the viewpoint of their own vision and understanding, often through their own culture. Given the relevance of the issue of developing future philologists’ intercultural competence and based on communicative and intercultural approaches to their professional training, a module aimed at developing future philologists’ intercultural competence was compiled and tested in the course of teaching the subject “Actual Problems of Modern Translation Studies” for master students of faculty of foreign languages of Pavlo Tychyna Uman State Pedagogical University. After completing the module, the students stated in their feedback on the course that the level of their intercultural competence had increased, and the tasks had a positive impact on their awareness of being translators and contributed to the development of practical skills in translating material with the content of culturally specific elements. The results obtained can be used in further scientific research and in the practical activities of university lecturers in the implementation of educational programmes in the speciality B 11 (035) Philology.
