Abstract
One of the priority tasks of modern education, particularly preschool education, is the formation of a nationally conscious citizen-patriot – з an individual with deep value orientations whose worldview, way of thinking, feelings, and actions are directed toward self-development and the building of a democratic civil society in Ukraine. This article highlights the features of fostering patriotism as a foundation for developing socio-civic competence in older preschool children. The relevance of the research problem and its social significance are defined. Based on scientific and methodological literature and current regulatory documents in the field of preschool education, the study reveals the meanings of the concepts of «patriotism» and «socio-civic competence». This competence in older preschool children is manifested in personal qualities, social feelings, love for the homeland, an interest in the national and cultural values of their people, basic knowledge about their native country, its state symbols, traditions, and customs, as well as a willingness to participate in social events aimed at improving collective life. It is noted that fostering patriotism occurs through systematic and purposeful pedagogical influence, aimed at strengthening children’s national identity, creating a positive image of their country, affirming an active civic position, and cultivating a valuable attitude toward family as part of the nation and its cultural heritage. It is on this foundation that true patriotism is born. The study emphasizes the importance of methods and tools that engage children in learning about Ukrainian traditions and culture, encouraging manifestations of patriotism and civic awareness in accordance with their age characteristics. These include conversations, reading literary works, folk games and toys, listening to musical compositions, and exploring various forms of folk art (pottery, wickerwork, embroidery, pysanka painting, etc.), as well as celebrating national and folk holidays and commemorating historical dates. The research also underscores the crucial role of the family in shaping patriotic feelings in children and the development of effective forms of collaboration between families and preschool educational institutions in this regard.
